Discover Engineers Week, Feb. 22-28, 2015. Join us in celebrating the engineers who make the world a better place.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers are once again partnering to celebrate Engineers Week, with a full-day event will be at the Corps' Portland District downtown headquarters in Portland, Ore. Participating students will be exposed to a variety of engineering disciplines through hands‐on workshops, panel discussions, a tour of the Edith Green‐Wendell Wyatt Building and an informal career fair staffed by local engineering firms and colleges.

This program allows students a unique opportunity to learn more about engineering professions, other aspects related to engineering and a variety of engineering career options. The day will begin with remarks by Portland District Commander Col. Jose Aguilar. Following this, students will break into two groups: half will depart for the morning building tour by foot, and the other half will remain at Block 300 to participate in a student specific program of hands‐on workshops and a panel discussions. Each group will be assigned engineering mentors who will help ensure students remain fully engaged as well as ensure safe travel to and from the building tour.

At noon, attendees will join back together to enjoy a complimentary lunch with engineering professionals and participate in an informal career fair to learn about future employment possibilities and degree programs. The afternoon will mirror morning events with groups switching to participate in the activities they missed in the morning. All Engineering Day activities will conclude around 3:20 p.m.

Program details:

  • Location: Block 300, 333 S.W. 1st Avenue, Portland, Oregon.
Participation is free, but space is limited to 120 junior and senior level students on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • School events coordinators will be asked to provide completed registration forms, video release forms (as appropriate) and total number of participating students from their school by Jan. 30.
  • All students must complete a registration form and signed video release form. The video release form must signed by a parent or legal guardian for students under the age of 18.
  • Each student is required to present a valid student ID or drivers license during registration on the day of the event in order to receive a building security badge. A security badge is required for the Block 300 building. Registration cannot be completed without a valid student ID or driver's license.
  • A clearly marked registration check‐in table will be in the lobby between 8 and 8:30 a.m., so that the event may begin on time. Students should leave backpacks and other large items at home, if they can.
  • Students are encouraged to identify their top three areas of interest when they complete the registration form. At a minimum, students will participate in two hands‐on workshops and one panel discussion. Areas of interest covered in different capacities in the day may include:
    • Electrical Engineering

    • Environmental Science & Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Computer Science & Engineering
    • Women in Engineering (female professionals discuss their careers from entry to senior level positions)
    • Engineering Related Professions (sample of technical non‐bachelors degree careers)
    • If students are unsure of their area of interest, “I don’t know!” maybe indicated on the registration form and an effort will be made to give the student a broad sampling of various engineering and engineering related disciples.
  • Students will be walking to the Edith Green‐Wendell Wyatt Building for the tour, which is near Block 300. This walk will be approximately a half-mile and take 10 minutes. Students should make proper considerations for attire regarding footwear and outerwear.
