John Day and The Dalles Navigation Locks Reopen to River Traffic Ahead of Schedule

Published March 22, 2018
PORTLAND, Ore. – Officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District re-opened the navigation locks at John Day Lock & Dam and The Dalles Lock & Dam today, three days ahead of schedule.

The Corps coordinated the navigation lock outage at Bonneville, The Dalles and John Day, to conduct scheduled maintenance with minimal impact to recreational and commercial river-users. Bonneville’s navigation lock re-opened to the public March 15.

The Corps will notify the public about closures in advance, if possible. The navigation locks are subject to closing at any time. Travelers on the Columbia River should call the lock operators listed below in advance of their arrival. Bonneville Lock Operator: 541-374-8323; The Dalles Lock Operator: 541-298-4007; John Day Lock Operator: 541-298-9712.

To maintain safe and reliable passage through this valuable navigation system, the Corps districts coordinate these annual closures with inland shippers and cruise lines to minimize impact to vessels that use the locks. Public notices and other navigation lock information are available on the Portland District’s website at www.nwp.usace.army.mil/Missions/Navigation.aspx.
