Orange you going to wear your life jacket?
These photos are from Cherry Fest which was April 28th, 2012. Ranger Amber Tilton partnered with the local Columbia Gorge Safe Kids organization and joined them at their booth to educate the community about safe practices around water. Notice the sign: "Orange you going to wear your life jacket?" By peeling a tangerine and dropping it in water, it will sink. However, with the peel on, it floats. This provides a good way to talk about wearing a Personal Flotation Device. By peeling an orange and then holding it around the orange and dropping it in, you can talk about making sure your jacket is the right size, otherwise it may not work (as demonstrated when the peel floats to top and the orange sinks). Also notice that Ranger Tilton is wearing an inflatable PFD. She gets a lot of comments on this, because people (men especially) do not realize that inflatables are an option. Safe Kids handed out free bike helmets that day and educated people about car seat safety.
