After more than a century of quiet brooding, Mount St. Helens, known to the Cowlitz as Lawetlat’la, or The Smoking Mountain, began to announce its impending wrath. In the end, the mountain’s eruption would prove to not be singular event, but the beginning of a decades-long geological and engineering challenge.
