First geocaching "amazing race" hosted at The Dalles
The Dalles Lock and Dam Visitor Center hosted its first-ever geocaching event Sat., March 29, 2014. The Amazing Race, Geocache Style drew more than 50 people of all ages and skill levels, who each braved the erratic weather to participate in this outdoor treasure hunt. For many participants, it was their first experience with geocaching, but park rangers and volunteers assisted them with using a GPS to guide them to the hidden treasures. Five geocaches were placed specifically for this event at Seufert and Patterson parks and the connecting Riverfront Trail. Each geocache was stuffed with items promoting water safety, reminding everyone to play it safe and always wear a life jacket! Upon completion of the race, all participants received a certificate of completion, signed by a park ranger. When a family of smiling faces returned to the visitor center, they were asked if they would go geocaching again. “Yes! We are hooked now,” said participant Jenni Nuzzi. “It is great to see people bringing their friends and family outdoors to use technology and enjoy the day," said Emma Nelson, a Park Ranger at The Dalles Lock and Dam. "Despite the moody weather, everyone left with goodies in their bags and smiles on their faces.”
