District divers key to removing Coos Bay hazard
Divers from Portland and San Francisco districts helped move two 3500-pound zinc anode sleds to get a dredging job back on track. The district dredging team, contracting and budget staff, survey crews and the Coast Guard collaborated to fix the potential hazard at the Coast Guard boathouse. The sleds, which minimize corrosion of the steel pilings, had slid out of place during earlier dredging. Divers passed the rigging to crews onto a dredging tugboat, which then pulled the blocks from the water and were then lifted to the docks by a Coast Guard boat hoist. Dredging resumed within 72 hours and quickly wrapped up. Using Corps divers to rig the sleds for hoisting out of the water saved the project thousands of dollars in delay charges and the time and money for a dive contract.
