Great Electrifying Event 2012
The 2012 Great Electrifying Event at Bonneville Lock and Dam was held Feb. 18 at the Washington Shore Visitor Center. Nearly 350 visitors made their way through information stations, learning about hydropower and its importance as a renewable, green resource. Read more about the GEE: Armed with activity booklets, young visitors began with learning about atoms and their positive and negative charges, explored how magnetism helps the Corps generate electricity, demonstrated how a circuit works and learned about conductors and insulators. After getting the basic theories of how hydropower and electricity work, would-be engineers took a powerhouse tour that demonstrated how these theories are applied in real life. A huge thank you goes out to Corps volunteers Jim Price, Keith Loeffler and Andreas Ehrlich, and to rangers Robin Norris, Jason Sharp, Claudia Round, Ryan Braaten and Chelsie Morris for their help in making this event such a success. Best of all, many attendees at the Great Electrifying Event were first-time visitors!
