A contractor places stones on the South Jetty at the mouth of the Columbia River, as part of the rehabilitation work the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers undertook. The work, carried out by contractor J.E. McAmis, included rebuilding three miles of the jetty’s trunk and head with more than 462,000 tons of stone, some weighing up to 40 tons each. South Jetty’s rehabilitation was part of a decade-long effort to restore the three jetties at the mouth of the Columbia River that protect one of the nation’s busiest trade corridors. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Portland District (USACE) will move forward this spring with a two-year safety and seismic repair project at Willamette Falls Locks ahead of the agency’s official transfer of the historic navigation lock system to the Willamette Falls Locks Authority, expected to take place in 2026.
