Nutrients are inorganic chemical constituents needed for plant and animal growth. Plants require inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus, silicate, and other elements for growth.

Stressors that affect nutrients:

  • Agriculture
  • Dredging
  • Extreme climatic events
  • Filling
  • Flow regulation
  • Logging
  • Marinas and overwater structures
  • Shoreline armoring
  • Urbanization
  • Volcanic activity
  • Wastewater discharges
  • Water diversion

Ecosystem structures that are affected by nutrients:

  • Plankton
  • Scrub-shrub forest emergent marsh
  • Mud / sand flats
  • Submerged aquatic vegetation
