The Corps of Engineers has contracted a study of double-crested cormorant nesting sites on East Sand Island, located north of Astoria on the Washington coast.

PORTLAND, ORE. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is hosting an evening webinar discussing the draft Environmental Impact Statement and the preferred alternative to reduce predation on juvenile salmon and steelhead listed under the Endangered Species Act by a large population of double-crested cormorants in the Columbia River estuary.  The evening webinar begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14.

 

The Corps’ Portland District is the federal land manager of East Sand Island and the lead agency for this National Environmental Policy Act process. The agency is working with its cooperating agencies: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture – Animal Plant Health Inspection Service – Wildlife Services, the Fish and Wildlife departments of Oregon and Washington.

 

The webinar offers direct dialog with the biologists and staff who have done the research and understand the alternatives.
