Corps to present Lost Creek, Applegate dam failure inundation maps

Published Sept. 10, 2015
PORTLAND, Ore. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will provide the opportunity for residents and business owners along the Rogue and Applegate rivers to view dam failure inundation maps in Shady Cove on Sept. 21 and in Grants Pass on Sept. 22 from 3 to 8:30 p.m.

These maps show flood paths, depths and timing in worst-case Lost Creek and Applegate dam failure scenarios. Corps employees will help explain the likelihood and consequences of such an event, as well as resources available to help plan and prepare for it. The maps will be of most interest and value to owners and residents of property within one mile of the Rogue and Applegate rivers.

“These maps are not like other flood maps people might be familiar with,” said Jim Buck, operations manager for the Corps’ Rogue River Basin Project, which operates Lost Creek and Applegate dams. “We want to make sure people have enough time and information to fully understand what they’re seeing, so we’ll be admitting small groups of people by advance reservation only.”
