The Dalles rangers celebrate Earth Day with Seufert rose garden clean-up

Published March 26, 2013

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers invites the public to join its park rangers for its annual Earth Day event at The Dalles Dam Visitor Center and Seufert Park April 20.

This year, the park rangers will host a spring clean up in the historic Seufert rose garden. This unique turn-of-the century garden is home to a wide variety of antique roses. Volunteers are needed to help pull weeds, prune, and offer a little tender loving care. "A bit of spring cleaning can go a long way to help a small garden flourish and maintain its health and beauty throughout the year," Park Ranger Amber Tilton said.

Registration and refreshments will begin at 8:45 a.m., and work will conclude around noon. Guests are welcome to pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the view of Mount Hood at one of the park’s many picnic tables. Participants will enjoy an afternoon tour of the dam’s visitor facilities, including the east fish ladder and powerhouse.

Gloves and other gardening tools will be available, however volunteers are welcome to bring their own. The Corps recommends volunteers bring comfortable clothing, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, long pants and sturdy closed-toe shoes.

Earth Day is a nationwide volunteer initiative promoting conservation and awareness of environmental issues. Since its establishment in 1970 it has grown internationally. To learn more about Earth Day, visit http://www.earthday.org/
