Corps to host second annual Elk Creek Day May 6

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host its second annual Elk Creek Day at the Lower Elk Creek Trailhead May 6.

The free event is open to the public and will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring numerous family-friendly outdoor activities for all ages and activity levels.

Scheduled activities include a 10-mile fun run at 9 a.m., 5K family fun run/walk at 9:10 a.m. and kids’ “slowest bike” races at 1 p.m. Corps park rangers will also be available to answer questions and provide educational opportunities for visitors interested in learning more about Elk Creek and the Rogue River Basin.

“The Elk Creek area provides incredible natural beauty along five miles of pedestrian trails now open to the public for hiking, biking, wildlife watching and more,” said David Hays, natural resource manager with the Rogue River Basin Project. “Elk Creek Day is our way of letting people know about all this fantastic area has to offer so they might use and enjoy it more in the future.”

To reach the Lower Elk Creek Trailhead, drive east on Crater Lake Highway 62 from Shady Cove and turn left onto Elk Creek Road. Make a right onto Old Elk Creek Road after two miles, and continue driving until you reach the trailhead. Signs will be posted along the way to help visitors find the event.
