John Day gate moves into position
Loading the final quarter section of the new John Day navigation lock downstream gate in Vancouver, Wash., on Nov. 23, 2010. The gate section is approximately 30 feet tall and 98 feet wide and weighs about half a million pounds. The other three gate sections already loaded and secured aboard the barge for transport to John Day Lock and Dam; one of the two new friction sheaves awaits loading. This activity is part of the 2010-2011 Columbia-Snake Rivers Extended Navigation Lock Outage, a 14-week, $50 million project that includes replacement of the downstream navigation lock gates at The Dalles, John Day and Lower Monumental dams, and a variety of maintenance and repair work at other navigation locks.
